2015 the year ahead, VAT news on round book prices

noun_42430_ccAfter a bumper year at the round, which saw 9 new books published and more go into labs, we’ve been a bit quiet of late. I think we may have worn ourselves out! However, we are beginning to get back into the groove and are looking forward to an equally productive 2015.

There are currently two projects underway in labs but we hope to add a few more in there. In addition, several authors of round projects will be speaking at conferences this year. If ever you see one of our authors, don’t be afraid to come up and say hello!

We regret to say that 2015 also begins with a bit of not-so-good news for our authors and readers. New VAT legislation in Europe came into force on January 1 2015. Among other things, this legislation meant that small businesses and individuals selling products online had to charge VAT on top of their sales where none had existed before. Amazon and Smashwords, the two main distributors of round books, adjusted prices automatically depending on where you are buying them from. You can read more about this here.

What does this mean? Well, some of the authors adjusted their prices down a bit to compensate whereas others have left them as they were. The end result is that the books may be a little more expensive (maybe 60 cents to 1 euro more expensive). However, we at the round are still committed to making these books the best and cheapest books for English teachers on the market and we think we can still do that! Bear in mind that a round title, even adjusted for VAT, still costs three to five times less than a traditional ELT methodology book.

We also hope to be a bit more active here on the blog this year, and round author and member Christina will be starting something to that effect in the next week or so. Stay tuned!
